Pilgrims recent Emergency Preparedness event and Open Day proved a huge success in highlighting key elements to consider when planning your response to an emergency incident: unfortunately, a real possibility in today’s environment.

Seminars and realistic scenarios were played out in the Academy’s state-of-the-art, 45,000 sq ft facility, complete with realistic settings, such as a collapsed building and a 'major incident' street. The use of actors, as well as the involvement of the Surrey Fire Service, added to the realism. Topics covered related to risk management, health and safety and staff training. Every aspect helped to demonstrate what organisations can do to mitigate risks, keep staff and customers safe and business operations running. Sessions helped show how staff can be trained to handle the aftermath of an emergency, increasing their chances of survival and reducing the risk of harm to themselves, their colleagues, customers and members of the public who may become involved.

The event was attended by around 40 delegates with responsibilities in security, health and safety, HR and facilities management.

Key areas for learning included:
• What to do in the event of a large-scale emergency
• Increasing urban safety awareness within your team
• A system of support covering staff awareness and training
• Integrating personal safety and enhanced first aid

The session was run at Pilgrims’ Academy, in Redhill, Surrey, with the support of Surrey Fire and Rescue Services who utilised the event as part of their emergency preparedness training.
